Sistema Kalinka’s readers are indeed a blessing and much needed to fill this important gap. Lermontov’s A Hero of our Time is an exciting story – with such colorful personalities, settings and emotions that it is a joy to have found a reader which retains all that and yet allows us language novices to comprehend the story and then later perhaps to attempt reading in the original version. Sistema Kalinka have such ample choices already but I am hoping they will include more Russian Classics (Dostoevsky’s and Turgenev’s for example which I am not seeing right now) very soon.
I simply love the fact that there such quality graded readers available in Russian since anyone who has begun studying the language for a while now realize that there are hardly any graded readers well structured and yet not losing the quality and the impression of the original story.
To anyone purchasing these books the biggest bonus are the audio files which are the best way to learn the spoken aspects of the language – if you are like me you would most likely reading to be quite manageable but to hear it spoken or narrated and with the accents placed in the right places is invaluable and also gets us attuned to the spoken language with all its nuances. I improved my Italian listening to so many audiobooks and I strongly advise anyone learning the language the same. Italian is blessed with a lot of excellent readers – indeed a wide variety at various levels – which I found seriously and disappointingly missing in Russian until I chanced upon Sistema Kalinka. So here is to hoping that we get more such readers of Russian Classics in the near future that we can boldly approach the originals and enjoy them all fully the way others have from across the world.
