I wanted to practice all four skills (i.e., reading, writing, speaking, listening) to become more fluent im Russian. However, I could not find the right reading resources for my level.
I tried “Short Stories in Russian for Beginners” on Amazon, but is TOO advanced for me.
I am so happy that I found Sistema!! I was elated that I could see a preview of the books prior to my purchase so I could see if they were appropriate for my level. They are also the perfect travel size at just over 5.5” x 8” with a great font style and size. I love that I can practice reading in Russian on the left side and try to translate the same story in English on the right side back to Russian. There is also plenty of white space for all my notes and helpful tip/grammar boxes. The stories are so digestible and quite interesting. They are exactly what I need to see grammar in practice and learn new vocabulary in context. The probing questions at the end of the stories forces me to read for understanding and allows me to practice speaking and put what I know into practice right away.
I also love the audio features for a number of reasons. 1) It helps me with my pronunciation. 2) It is a nice pace to where I can mimic the speaker as I’m reading. 3) I can download the stories and make my own iTunes playlist to listen to in the car.
I purchased books 1-3 for level A1 and will certainly purchase books for the subsequent levels. I also opted for this series vice the “Stories in Easy Russian” because I already have a general workbook and one specifically for the cases from a different vendor. I simply needed short stories.
Don’t delay! These are excellent resources and you get so much value for the price.

These stories are excellent for beginners. They are a great tool to improve your vocabulary and to get used to Russian signal words. On top of that, they are also very enjoyable to read! I am very happy I bought all three books of “25 Texts in Easy Russian”!
